Roopa Ganguly is tired of playing the strong woman. A distinction that most Indian actresses would gladly bargain for, playing the modern Indian woman somehow just does not excite this actress anymore. "I don't know why people come to me only for strong characters. It's probably because I look strong. But then I would like people to know that I can also portray characters of feeble women with as much ease. Maybe some day I will be considered for those roles too,'' was how the actress summed up her thoughts at the Seventh Cinefan Asian Film Festival held recently in the Capital. Best known for her portrayal of Draupadi in B.R. Chopra's magnum opus "Mahabharata", Roopa has carved a niche for herself in Bengali cinema with her performances in award-winning films over the years. And while she may have given up on Hindi cinema, Roopa is all for Bollywood actresses doing Bengali films. "It is encouraging that they are keen to do it. It is obviously good for us and we welcome them to come and do Bengali films as they have been able to attract attention towards our cinema,'' says she. In the festival as not just an actress but also a producer, Roopa's "Fistful of Films" saw her don more than one role. Five parallel stories directed by five young directors may have made the film a different affair, but Roopa says production is still no easy affair.-- Lakshmi B. Ghosh
