In aid of needy animals

Titled "The Incredible Moment" and all set to be launched by model-turned-actor John Abraham this coming August in the Capital is India's largest ever photo exhibition to be held in aid of needy animals.

The mega event, which has enlisted 250 photographers from India and abroad and will present 2,500 images, will be thrown open to the public on World Photography Day (August 19) at Maurya Sheraton.

Proceeds from the three-day photo sale organised by People for Animals will go towards setting up animal hospitals in Kerala and Dehra Dun. With the pre-sale of the photographs bound by the theme "India", capturing the country in its various moods and perspective, having already pursed Rs.52 lakhs, organisers confess that black and white photographs were picked up as soon as they were framed and mounted.

"We have seen that there has been a growing awareness and demand for museum quality photographs, which are now fast becoming collector's items. People are realising the skill and the effort that goes into the making of a good quality picture. We are offering to the customers an incredible collection of heart-stopping moments captured on the camera by India's finest photographers,'' said the Chairperson of People for Animals, Maneka Gandhi, at a press conference in the Capital earlier this week.

"Like our earlier fund-raiser, Affordable Art, wherein PFA offered 600 new works by India's top artists at one low standard price, we are now bringing to Delhi an opportunity to buy valuable signed works at a fraction of their worth. While photography has come of age abroad with prints selling for thousands of dollars, in India the boom is poised to begin. Informed collectors are already investing in photography portfolios,'' added Ms. Gandhi.

"The exhibition will have contributions from 30 wildlife photographers, all capturing the very best of wildlife in India. I have contributed pictures that can be hung up on the wall and will live on permanently. The picture should entertain, inform and excite the viewer and should linger on in the mind notwithstanding the test of time,'' said noted photographer S. Paul, who has also contributed photographs to the show. -- Bindu Shajan Perappadan
