KOZHIKODE: Ombudsman for Local Self-Government Institutions T.K. Chandrasekharadas on Tuesday directed panchayats to implement the Central Government's solid waste handling rules. He also directed that medical reports should also be considered while making arrangements to control pollution. At his sitting at Kozhikode district panchayat hall, the Ombudsman also observed that more complaints about pollution in panchayats were being heard than before. The Ombudsman also called for an explanation from the secretary to Balusserry block panchayat for not appearing before it when a complaint relating to the Thattarikunnummal drinking water scheme in Atholi grama panchayat was being examined. The panchayat authorities in Tamarassery were directed to replace faulty pipelines within three months. The Perambra block panchayat member A.K. Chandran Master had lodged a complaint that he was not being informed about the meetings of grama sabha in Cheruvannur grama panchayat. The Ombudsman observed that it was the duty of the secretary concerned to inform block members and MLAs about the time and venue of meetings of grama sabha and directed that it be done in future. It was also noticed by the Ombudsman, in a private petition, that lawyers appearing for the Nalleppally panchayat in Palakad district were being paid their professional fee before the proceedings of the case were completed. The Ombudsman examined 33 petitions from Kozhikode and 18 from Palakkad. Settlement was reached in 18 cases.
