`GETTING CLOSER to nature' has been the mantra environmental scientists have been chanting over the years to protect earth's bounty. Youths have an important role to play in taking this message to the masses. Hence, it becomes imperative for educational institutions to inculcate the sense of conserving nature among students. Rightfully, The American College in Madurai, in an attempt to keep their students updated on information pertaining to various factors that degraded the environment, organised a trekking expedition from Kumbakkarai Falls to Kodaikanal on July 23. The 20-km-long route contained plenty of information for the 30-odd student volunteers of the National Service Scheme, Youth Red Cross and programme officers of the college. Prior to the expedition, Winfred Thomas, professor, Department of Botany, briefed the students on the various aspects of ecology and the reasons for the environmental degradation. The students could find soil erosion and habitat destruction at several places along the route.
