NEW DELHI: Top seed K. Sasikiran maintained his winning run by scoring over Kabisch in the fifth round of the ZMD Open chess tournament in Dresden, Germany, on Wednesday. Sasikiran needed 83 moves to down the German, rated at a modest 2327, on a day when second seed Iranian Ehsan Ghaem Maghami fell back after a 35-move draw with Maximillion Meinhardt. Sasikiran, at five points, leads with eight others in the nine-round competition. Madurai-boy Poobesh Anand produced one of the biggest results of his promising career when he drew with second seed Vladislav Borovikov and reached 4.5 points from six rounds of the Czech Open chess tournament at Pardubice on Wednesday. Sixth seed Sandipan Chanda scored over Ukraine's International Master Igor Smirov and reached 4.5 points. The results (involving Indians): sixth round: Thomas Henrichs (Ger, 5) bt S. Kidambi (4); Vladislav Borovikov (Ukr, 4) drew with Poobesh Anand (4); Igor Smirnov (Ukr, 3.5) lost to Sandipan Chanda (4.5); Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury (4) drew with Tomas Polak (Cze, 4); Tejas Bakre (4) drew with Pavel Vavra (Cze, 4); Tania Sachdev (3) lost to Sergei Iskusnykh (Rus, 4); Jan Turner (Cze, 3) lost to M. Vijayalakshmi is second
S. Vijayalakshmi defeated eventual champion Almira Skripchenko in 55 moves to finish runner-up in the ladies tournament of the Biel International chess festival in Biel, Switzerland, on Wednesday. Vijayalakshmi matched Almira's tally of 6.5 points from 10 rounds but had to rest content with the second spot due to inferior tiebreak score. Vijayalakshmi came up with a strong finish. She won the last two rounds to avenge the defeats suffered at the hands of Almira and Elizabeth Pahtz, earlier in the tournament. Final standings: 1-2. Almira Skripchenko (Fra), S. Vijayalakshmi (Ind) (6.5 each); 3. Inna Gaponenko (Ukr, 6); 4. Elisabeth Pahtz (Ger, 4.5), 5. Elena Sedina (Ita, 3.5); 6. Ekaterina Korbut (Rus, 3).
