NEW DELHI: All it took was a mere 70 minutes for Lin Chen and defending champion Feng Yalan to prove their superiority over unranked teammates in the boys and girls' finals of the Asian junior table tennis championship at the NDMC Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.

Having put an end to the Korean challenge in the semifinal in the morning, Lin Chen and Liu Miao produced a predictable fare in the boys' title match. In a match devoid of long rallies, Lin Chen did not allow Liu Miao many liberties. During his 11-7, 13-11, 11-8, 11-6 victory, Lin Chen faced a game-point in the second game but never allowed his lesser experienced rival to get as close for the remainder of the match.

Earlier, Feng Yalan retained her title by racing past Peng Xue in just 26 minutes of playing time. The 11-7, 11-8, 11-9, 11-9 verdict gave Feng Yalan a `double' while Peng Xue had to settle for the runner-up slot for the second time in the day. Earlier, in an all-Chinese doubles final, Feng Yalan and Liu Chun downed Yao Yan and Peng Xue in five games.

Anti-climax

The anti-climatic finale to the championship was mainly due to the fact that the Chinese spearheads in both sections were just too good for their teammates. The difference in class was too apparent with Lin Chen and Feng Yalan controlling the proceedings from the start. Perhaps, Liu Miao and Peng Xue did not enter the arena with the belief that they could trouble their more illustrious compatriots.

However, unlike last year, China could not repeat its title sweep. Taipei took the boys' doubles title while Japan claimed the honours in mixed doubles. For India, it was an expected end with Soumyajit Ghosh and Neha Aggarwal losing the cadet semifinals.
