Efforts on to make beach volleyball popular

Chennai: Come September, the school kids on the coastal belt of Tamil Nadu will be introduced to beach volleyball on a big scale. This is part of the programme, to be launched by the Schools Games Federation of India and its Tamil Nadu circle, which will make arrangements for boys and girls near the coastal areas to play the game.

The spadework for the programme has already begun. Martin Sudhakar, Coordinator of beach volleyball in the Volleyball Federation of India, has conducted about six clinics in the coastal districts such as Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore and Kanyakumari. "We have finished clinics for the physical directors of schools on the coastline and the remaining clinics will be completed in due course before the launch of the game in September," he said. He also that in the interior district headquarters artificial sand courts would be prepared for them to practise and play.

The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu is also involved in this project. In fact, it is directing the school PDs to attend the clinics so that they can help their students to play the game. The VFI's Beach Volleyball Council is offering technical support, according to Sudharkar. The SDAT is also conducting `tests' for school students every year and along with that it is introducing games such as beach volleyball, chess, road cycling, judo and throwball.
