Brazil to open campaign against Tunisia in Pool `B'

VISAKHAPATNAM: Last edition's runner-up Brazil takes on Tunisia in the Pool `B' opener of the 13th World men's under-21 volleyball championship at the Municipal Corporation's Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium on August 6.

Another favourite Russia, which has won the highest number of titles, meets Cuba at the main venue — Port Indoor Stadium — in the second match of the day in Pool `A'.

India clashes with Morocco in the same pool the same evening. The tournament will have a rest day on August 9 during the pool stage and on August 12 before the knock-out stage.

The following are the pools and the continental zones from which the teams qualified:

Pool `A': Russia and Serbia & Montenegro (Europe), India (host), Cuba (North and Central America), Morocco (Africa) and Korea (Asia). All the matches, plus the semifinals and final, will be played at the Port Indoor Stadium.

Pool `B': Brazil (South America), Germany and Netherlands (Europe), U.S. (North and Central America), Tunisia (Africa) and Iran (Asia). Matches will be held at the Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium.

The pool matches will be played on a league format with the winner receiving two points and loser one. No point will be awarded if a team gives a walkover or walks out during a match.

The fifth and sixth-placed teams in each pool will be eliminated after the league phase. In the next stage, the winner and runner-up of each pool will play for the top four places in the knock-out pattern in the Port Indoor Stadium, where the semifinals will be held on Aug. 13. The final is scheduled for Aug. 14.

The schedule:

At Port Indoor Stadium: League matches: Aug. 6: Serbia & Montenegro vs Korea (10 a.m.), Cuba vs Russia (3 p.m.) and India vs Morocco (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 7: Korea vs Russia (10 a.m.), Morocco vs Cuba (3 p.m.) and Serbia & Montenegro vs India (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 8: Russia vs Morocco (10 a.m.), Cuba vs Serbia & Montenegro (3 p.m.) and India vs Korea (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 9: Rest day.

Aug. 10: Korea vs Morocco (10 a.m.), India vs Cuba (3 p.m.) and Serbia & Montenegro vs Russia (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 11: Cuba vs Korea (10 a.m.), Russia vs India (3 p.m.) and Morocco vs Serbia & Montenegro (5.30 p.m.). Aug. 12: Rest day.

Second and final round: Aug. 13: Semifinals: Winner of Pool `A' vs runner-up of Pool `B' (3 p.m.) and runner-up of Pool `A' vs winner of Pool `B' (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 14: Losing semifinalists' match (3 p.m.) and final (5.30 p.m.).

At Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium: Aug. 6: Tunisia vs Brazil (10 a.m.), Iran vs Germany (3 p.m.), U.S. vs Holland (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 7: Iran vs Tunisia (10 a.m.), Germany vs Holland (3 p.m.) and Brazil vs U.S. (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 8: Tunisia vs Germany (10 a.m.), U.S. vs Iran (3 p.m.) and Holland vs Brazil (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 9: Rest day.

Aug. 10: Tunisia vs U.S. (10 a.m.), Germany vs Brazil (3 p.m.) and Iran vs Holland (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 11: Brazil vs Iran (10 a.m), Holland vs Tunisia (3 p.m.) and U.S. vs Germany (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 12: Rest day.

Second and final round (matches for fifth to eighth places): Aug. 13: Third-placed team in Pool `A' vs fourth-placed team in Pool `B' (3 p.m.); Fourth-placed team in Pool `A' vs third-placed team in Pool `B' (5.30 p.m.); Aug. 14: Match between losers of previous day (3 p.m.) and winners (5.30 p.m.).
