DINDIGUL: : With the decision of a bank to share its profits for welfare of community, a decade-old dream of people at VMS Colony at Chinnalapatti has become a reality. Canara Bank has constructed an overhead tank at the colony at a cost of R.3 lakhs under its Jalayoga Yojana scheme. Inaugurating the tank, Collector S. Murugaia said that at present, drinking water has been supplied to Chinnalapatti from the Athoor Kamarajar dam. To cater to the growing needs of the people, an appeal was made to the Government to release water from the Vaigai dam to pump water from Peranai, another drinking water channel to Chinnalapatti on the Vaigai channel near Nilakottai. Now the banks have started funding welfare of the people. Canara Bank (Head Office) Deputy General Manager, M. Akshaya Kumar, in his special address, said that the bank had funded similar projects at two other places in Madurai region, he said. Deputy General Manager S. S. Baskaran said that the main objective of the scheme was to fulfil the basic needs of the people, particularly in rural areas. Assistant General Manager of the Bank (Madurai Region) P. V. Ramachandran pointed out that the bank has been spending one per cent of its net profit for social development. Chinnalapatti panchayat president Chitrakala Murugan, lead bank manager T. Palanisamy, branch manager, S. Sankarasubramanian and others spoke.
