Map quiz for students

CHENNAI: The Survey of India will organise a State-level "Map Quiz" here to create awareness among students on Cartography and Geography.

Students belonging to standards VIII, IX and X are eligible to take part in the quiz, says M. Stalin, Deputy Director, Indian National Cartographic Association.

M.Tech in nanotechnology

THANJAVUR: The Academic council of Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) — Deemed University on July 23 approved the introduction of M.Tech in Nanotechnology with specialisation in health and M.Tech in Industrial Mathematics and Scientific Computing from this year.

The meeting was attended by Prof. T.R. Natesan, R. Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vijaya Varadan of Arkansas University and Dr. Kasuachi Miamoto of Musahi Institute of Technology, Tokyo. The council asked the SASTRA management to pay scholarship to students doing Ph.D and M.Tech to attract quality students.

The council also approved certificates, diploma and degree courses for six months, one year and two years in the distance mode of training teachers employed in polytechnic and engineering colleges. — Staff Reporter

TNTDC tour to Rameswaram

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation is organising a conducted tour to Rameswaram from Chennai in connection with "Adi Ammavasai," on August 4.

The corporation's special deluxe bus will leave Chennai at 8 p.m. on August 2 and reach Rameswaram at 11 a.m. the next day. After an overnight's stay, it will leave Rameswaram on August 4 and arrive here on August 5 morning. C.A. results

CHENNAI: The result of the Chartered Accountants Professional Education-11 examination, held in May, are likely to be declared at 2 p.m. on July 29. The results and the details of marks will be available on the website www.caresults.nic.in. The merit list will also be available on the above website, says a release issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Students desirous of having their results on their e-mail addresses, have to pre-register at the above website. — Special Correspondent

Villager deposes in bus burning case

SALEM: Three witnesses, including a villager, deposed before the Salem First Additional District Sessions judge D. Krishna Raja in the Dharmapuri bus burning case here on Thursday.

Gauravan of Puliampatti denied his earlier statement, which the police had recorded immediately after the incident. When the Special Public Prosecutor R. Srinivasan asked him whether he knew the then Puliampatti village president, Muniappan, (accused no.4 in the case) and whose motorbike was used to set the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University bus on fire by a mob following the conviction of AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa in the Pleasant Stay hotel case, Gauravan said he knew nothing about him.

The other two witnesses who deposed were Sunil, a partner in the firm, which sold the motorbike to Muniappan and Vijendran, an employee of an insurance firm that provided the risk cover to the motorbike. — Special Correspondent

Heavy rain

Nagercoil: Heavy rain lashed various parts of the district for the fifth day on Thursday.

The Public Work Department stopped water release from Pechipparai, Perunchani, Chittar I and Chittar II for irrigation.

Tribal settlements and picnic spots such as Kalikesam, Vattaparai and plantations at Maramalai road was cut of due to breaches on Balamore Road. The water level in Pechiparai dam stood at 31.40 feet as against the total capacity of 48 feet, 62 feet in Perunchani (total capacity 77 feet), 5.12 feet in Chittar I (total capacity 18 feet) and 5.25 feet in Chittar II (18 feet).

The maximum level of 72 mm rainfall was recorded at Chittar I followed by 55 mm in Chittar II, 52.6 mm in Perunchani, 52 mm in Puthen dam, 47.4 mm in Surulode, 37 mm in Pechipparai, 35 mm in Kannimar, 25 mm in Nagercoil and 22.2 mm in Myladi. — Staff Reporter

Loans disbursed

Nagercoil: The Collector, Sunil Paliwal, distributed loans to the tune of Rs.16.91 lakhs to 165 persons on behalf of Tamil Nadu Minorities Corporation here on Wednesday.

He said that loans had been extended for small entrepreneurial ventures based on the recommendation of TAMCO. The Government had constituted a board for minorities and loans up to Rs.25,000 were being disbursed with low rate of five per cent interest.

Thirteen members from Manavilai, 15 from Periavilai, 17 from Melaperuvilai, 15 from Thalakkanvilai, 68 from Lekshipuram and 20 members from Aralvoimozi have been recommended by TAMCO to receive loans from respective primary agriculture cooperative banks in their area.

The chairman of TAMCO, Justin Selvaraj, Kanyakumari central co-operative bank special officer, Meera Bai, took part in the function. — Staff Reporter

House panel visit on Aug 2, 3

PUDUKOTTAI: The Assembly Estimates Committee would visit the district on August 2 and 3, according to the Collector, R. Thiagarajan.The committee, headed by P.H. Paul Manoj Pandian, MLA, would inspect development works and a few institutions run by service organisations in the district.

The panel members would also hold discussions with senior officials and the Collector. — Special Correspondent

2,000 SHGs to be formed

KARUR: A total of 2,000 women self help groups are to be formed in the district shortly through various non-governmental organisations, according to the Collector, A. Karthik.

That apart, the DRDA is engaged in the formation of at least five women SHGs in each of the 158 panchayats in the district. — Staff Reporter

Own buildings for 11 hostels

Tiruvarur: Own buildings will be constructed for eleven hostels for students belonging to Backward Classes (BC), Most Backward Classes (MBC) and Denotified Community at a cost of Rs.3.46 crores in the district this year, said the Collector, P. Ekambaram, at Tiruvarur recently.

Speaking at a mass contact programme at Aravur village in Valangaiman panchayat union, he said that a hostel building has already been completed at a cost of Rs.31.50 lakhs at Koradachery.

The Government has allotted Rs.67 lakhs for providing scholarships to BC and MBC students. — Special Correspondent

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 78.58 feet today.

The inflow was 42,860 cusecs and the discharge, 12,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

AIADMK observes fast

ERODE: Activists of AIADMK observed a token fast in front of the Telephone Bhavan here on Thursday, criticising Karnataka Government for not releasing water into the Cauvery and the Centre for not taking efforts to order Karnataka to follow the tribunal's interim order. The fast was led by former transport minister and organising secretary of AIADMK K.A. Sengottaiyan.

Four held for dowry harassment

ERODE: Four persons were held on Thursday on charges of dowry harassment. According to the Ammapet police, Padmini (21), wife of Saravanan of Muniyanure, had killed her three-year-old daughter and hanged herself a few days back.

The police registered a case of murder followed by suicide.

Padmini's brother Senthil lodged a complaint with the police that his sister took the extreme step due to dowry harassment by her husband, his mother Kaliammal, sister Thulasimani and relative Illampirai, after which all the four were arrested.
