KOZHIKODE: A revised proposal is being submitted for the development of Kappad as a national tourist spot.

A proposal for the development of Kappad as a national tourism centre considering its historical importance, with Central assistance had been sanctioned earlier.

The earmarked Central funding was to the tune of Rs. 1.5 crores to strengthen and beautify the Kappad beach.

The revised proposal is being got up on the suggestion of Tourism Minister K. C. Venugopal, the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) secretary K. C. Gopinath said.

Additional funds would be sought as per the revised proposal.

The revised plan, includes a museum showcasing the historic connotations of Kappad as the spot where the Portuguese first landed in the country. A related library is planned too, in addition to strengthening and beautification of the beach under earlier plan.

As per the development project, submitted by the Water Resources Department which is the implementing agency, the natural beauty of the environs of Kappad would be maintained in toto.

The Executive Engineer, Water Resources Department, A.Valsalan, said reinforcements planned to restore the beach would include construction of breakwaters of 30ft to 40ft width. The measure is expected to lead to accumulation of sand on the sea stretch.

The Vasco da Gama memorial will be renovated and if necessary, shifted to another spot.

Efforts are on by the DTPC to acquire land for building the museum.

The conservation measures at the beach would include the building of a sea wall between the two rock formations the Thoovappara and Vadakkepara.

The building of paved pathway along the beach, putting up of seats for tourists, and installation of lights form part of the beautification measures.
