Rubber clones to be launched

KOTTAYAM: Security has been tightened for President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's visit to the district on Friday.

The President, accompanied by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, is expected to arrive here at 11.30 a.m. He will then proceed to the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) campus at Puthuppally to inaugurate the year-long golden jubilee celebrations of one of India's premier agriculture research facilities. The President would dedicate the two high-yielding variety rubber clones, RRII 414 and RRII 430, to the nation on the occasion.

The Chief Minister, who would preside over the function, will lay the foundation stone for the Golden Jubilee building, which will house the centralised lab facilities. E.V.K.S. Elangovan, Union Minister of State for Commence, will plant the first sapling at the proposed clone museum on RRII campus. K.Suresh Kurup, Vayalar Ravi and P.C. Thomas (all MPs) and A Sengupta, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, will extend felicitations.

Later in the afternoon, the President will dedicate the special assistance programme for child cancer patients organised by Karunya Nilayalam, a charitable society, at M.M. Town Hall. Baselius Mar Thoma Mathews II, Catholicos of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, will preside over the function. The President would also visit St. Berchman's College, Changanassery, for an interaction with students. The college, accredited `Five Star' status by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), has also been selected among the 46 centres nationwide with potential to be a centre of excellence. Mr. Kalam would plant a sapling on the campus on the occasion. Arch Bishop Joseph Powathil will preside over the function.
