SFI to launch agitation on university campuses

Staff Reporter

Demand for 50 per cent merit seats in professional courses

KANNUR: The Students Federation of India (SFI) will launch an agitation on university campuses demanding 50 per cent merit seats in professional courses conducted by universities, probe into irregularities in university recruitments, steps to improve university examination system and restoration of democratic character of university bodies.

SFI State president T.V. Rajesh told a press conference here on Thursday that various universities in the State were levying huge fees from students who joined professional courses being directly conducted by the universities.

While the tuition fees of merit students in engineering colleges directly run by Kerala and Calicut Universities was at par with that of merit students in Government colleges, the Mahatma Gandhi University had fixed it at Rs. 25,000. Huge fee structure was also fixed for the MG and Kannur Universities' B.Sc. Nursing, B.Pharm. and MCA courses.

Mr. Rajesh said that the universities had become centres of corruption after their elected bodies were disbanded and nominated panels constituted. The SFI would lay siege to the universities to raise these demands, he said.

The agitation would begin on August 1, he said.
