KAKINADA: The need for exploitation of the gas reserves off the Kakinada coast was suggested by K S R Murthy, official spokesman of Pradesh Congress committee and a former bureaucrat at a press conference here on Thursday. He wanted the Chief Minister to convene a meeting of scientists of various national institutes and discuss with them the feasibility of starting a corporation for exploration of hydrocarbons in Krishna Godavari basin to avail optimum benefit. Since two lakh crores of rupees worth gas reserves are reportedly struck off the Kakinada coast during the exploration taken up by the Gujarat Petroleum Corporation, Mr Murthy wanted the processing of the gas be done at a refinery set up here so that the State would benefit with Gujarat. To decide on the State's share in the gas struck, he wanted the Chief Minister to discuss with his Gujarat counterpart and the ONGC chief. On the Rs.90 crore per annum paid by the ONGC towards the royalty, Mr Murthy said the Government should insist for its revision as it was fixed decades ago.
