Three landmines unearthed

WARANGAL: A police team unearthed three landmines near a culvert between Karlapally and Laxmipuram villages in Govindaraopet mandal.

According to Mulug Circle Inspector V. Tirupathi, unidentified naxals planted three landmines with huge explosive material targeting policemen.

A bomb disposal squad rushed to the spot to defuse the mines. - Staff Reporter

Transco Lok Adalat postponed

HYDERABAD: The next sitting of Lok Adalat for APTransco that is scheduled for July 30 has been postponed to August 6.

All cases that have been posted for that date will now be heard at 2.30 p.m. at Mint Compound on August 6, according to a press release. - Staff Reporter

Couple commits suicide

CUDDAPAH: A tiffin stall owner Sujoy, 40, and his wife Santhi, 32, committed suicide by hanged themselves here on Wednesday.

The couple left behind a note purportedly written by them stating that they were ending their lives as they were vexed with life. The Cuddapah II Town police registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Tobacco growers' gesture

HYDERABAD: Virginia tobacco growers of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have jointly contributed a sum of Rs. 50 lakhs to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

A delegation led by Guntur Tobacco Board Chairman P. Dayachari handed over the demand draft for the amount to Union Minister of Commerce Kamalnath in New Delhi on July 25.

Naxalites set two lorries afire

KHAMMAM: Naxalites of the CPUSI set fire to two lorries near Anisettipalli village in Kothagudem division in the early hours of Thursday. According to reports, a lorry transporting beedi leaf from Bhadrachalam to Nanded was stopped near the village by some 20 naxalites.

They forced the crew to get down, broke open the fuel tank and set it afire after dousing with diesel.

Another lorry on its way from Maharashtra to a Palvancha-based industrial unit with a load of gypsum was also stopped by them at the same place and torched. - Staff Reporter

Fake currency racket busted

KURNOOL: The police arrested four persons and busted a fake currency racket here on Thursday.

According to Deputy SP Ammi Reddy, the accused persons secured fake currency in the ratio of 1:2.5 (original and fake) from a "frequent visitor'' and exchanged locally.

The arrested were identified as P. Raghavendra, P.K. Sarveswar Babu, both from Kurnool, K. Nagaraju (30) of Kodumur and G. Eswar Reddy of Tartoor near Nandikotkur.

Ban on strikes in Genco

HYDERABAD: The Government has prohibited strikes in all services under the Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited for six months with effect from July 22, according to an official press release. - Special Correspondent

Protests against Gurgaon lathicharge

HYDERABAD: Demonstrations were held in different parts of the country in response to the call given by Indian Federation of Trade Unions to protest against the recent lathicharge on workers at Gurgaon.

IFTU national committee's general secretary D.V. Krishna said that the police arrested 220 demonstrators in Delhi and 30 others in Hyderabad.

Condemning the arrests, he demanded their immediate release.

Saramma of JMJ College, Cuddapah, bagged the first prize in the junior college section and G. Ramana Devi of SKRRS high school, Cuddapah, stood first among degree students, AIR Programme Head N. Woman relieved of gold ornaments

Nellore: Miscreants waylaid a woman passenger near Peddapariya railway station of Ogili mandal on Thursday and snatched away her gold chain and other ornaments after assaulting her. In a separate incident, some miscreants gained entry into a house in Siddavaram village of Rapur mandal and took away Rs. 11,000 cash while the inmates were sleeping.- Staff Reporter

Seva rates at temple slashed

CHITTOOR: The seva rates at Varasiddi Vinayaka Swamy temple have been reduced, according to its Executive Officer Kesavulu. He said that the kalyanotsavam ticket price was reduced to Rs.611 from Rs. 1,116. Likewise, the price of ungel seva ticket has been reduced to Rs.250. - Correspondent

Rajahmundry: The Principal of Rajahmahendri Degree College T.K. Visweswara Reddy said that the Board of Intermediate Education has allowed the college to start Intermediate classes from this academic year. SFI, PDSU dharna

Rajahmundry: The Students Federation of India (SFI) and Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) held protest dharnas separately on Thursday here. SFI leader T. Srinu led the protest held in front of Municipal Corporation against the lack of basic amenities in municipal schools.

The PDSU staged dharna under the leadership of district secretary M. Ramakrishna demanding filling of lecturer posts in colleges and sanction of scholarships. — Staff Reporter

Train halt

Rajahmundry: The Divisional Railway Manager (Commercial) of South Central Railway said that from August 1, train no.2718/2717 Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam Ratnachal Express would stop at Tuni railway station for one minute on experimental basis for six months.

Ratnachal will arrive from Vijayawad at Tuni at 9.56 and leave at 9.57 and the one from Vizag will reach Tuni at 14.02 hours and leave at 14.03 daily. — Staff Reporter

Ministers' visit

Srikakulam: The Revenue Minister, Dharmana Prasada Rao and Minister for Irrigation, M.Mareppa, who is Minister in charge for Srikakulam district will visit the district on Tuesday.

The PCC coordinator for Municipal elections, Rayapati Srinivas and PCC observer S.Gopal will visit the district on Friday.

They will hold a meeting of party workers at the Bapuji Kalamandir.

The party strategy for the ensuing municipal elections, among other things are expected to be discussed.

Also, Vangapandu Appala Swamy, member of Official Language Committee will visit the district on 27.

He will review implementation of the official language in the collectorate and other divisional offices in the district on the same day. — Special Correspondent
