Heavy flows continue into the dam from upper reaches of Maharashtra

NIZAMABAD: All the 42 gates of the Sri Ram Sagar Project were opened discharging 2 lakh cusecs of water into the Godavari river by Thursday afternoon, according to the project Deputy Superintending Engineer L. Rajeswar Reddy.

Nine gates were lifted after midnight last discharging 25,000 cusecs of water.

The remaining gates were opened in three phases since this morning. The engineers decided to let out water following huge inflows into the dam due to incessant rain in the upper reaches of Maharashtra.

All crest gates of the Vishnupuri project in Maharashtra were opened on Wednesday. As of now, the inflows into the SRSP and the outflows from it were equal.

There was a fluctuation in the inflows and if inflows recede, some of the gates would be closed, said the Deputy SE.

Inflows to continue

He said the inflows at this amount would continue in next four to five days. Meanwhile, the Kakatitya, (right canal) and the Saraswathi, (left canal) were being given 6,500 cusecs each and it was likely to go upto 9,000 cusecs in a day or two.

Though the three turbines in the powerhouse are running, if the discharges are maintained at 9,000 cusecs in each canal, the total installed capacity of 27 MW would be generated.

With the water being released in the Lakshmi canal, small and medium irrigation tanks in Armoor area are getting huge amounts of water.

Visitors throng area

There is a stream of visitors to the project site to have a glimpse of water release into the river.

A large number of people from nearby places are visiting the dam by various modes of transportation.

The farmers are happy and making visit to the dam even leaving aside their work as the water level reached almost the full reservoir level after several years.
