Court orders awaited on private medical college admissions

Special Correspondent

Criticism of Government on the issue baseless, says Minister

PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry Health Minister E. Valsaraj has rubbished the criticisms of a section of political parties that he was causing confusion in deciding the pattern of admission under the government quota to the MBBS course in private medical colleges here. Declaring open a Rural Labour and Child Welfare Centre at Sedarapet, near here, he said the State was awaiting Supreme Court orders on the pattern of admission to be followed under the management and government quotas in the private institutions. He said the administration last year issued an order envisaging equal sharing of the seats in the private medical colleges — between the management and the Government.

But a court verdict last year (2004-2005), in a case filed by private institutions challenging the government order, stated that 60 per cent of the seats should be filled by colleges' management and the remaining by the Government.

In the meanwhile,of four private medical colleges, two had obtained the "deemed university status" and candidates now were to be sponsored for the remaining two colleges only. He said the apex court directive was likely to be known on August 5.

In the circumstances criticism of the Government on the issue was "baseless."
