Special Economic Zone will come up in Sedarapet on 1,000 acres: Minister
PONDICHERRY: Health and Labour Minister of Pondicherry E. Valsaraj has said that the Labour Department would revive soon the apprenticeship training programme to enable youth to get trained for appointment as clerks or store keepers in government departments here. Around 500 youth would be trained in batches to relieve the educated young boys and girls of unemployment problem. Declaring open the 13th Labour and Child Welfare centre of the Department of Labour at Sedarapet in the Oussudu Assembly segment near here on Thursday, Valsaraj said the Vocational Training Centre of the Union Territory Administration had been running in cooperation with the Government of France had been taken over by the Pondicherry Government and soon courses in bio-medical engineering and bio-medical technology would be provided. These courses were job oriented and already an entrepreneur from Malaysia had promised to have placements for the students passing out of these courses. Stating that several pilot programmes and welfare projects were implemented in Pondicherry kind of which could hardly be seen anywhere in the country, he said a Special Economic Zone would come up in Sedarapet on 1,000 acres and already 600 acres had been acquired for the project which would encourage non-polluting industries. The Welfare Board for the Building and Construction Workers was set up in 2001 benefiting the poor construction workers and also carpenters and others engaged in construction activities. The reduction in membership enrolment fee from Rs. 240 to Rs. 100 had enabled 1,000 more persons to get enrolled in the Board during the last one month. The Government was collecting a one percent cess from the municipalities, PWD and also those building commercial complexes to strengthen the corpus of the board. Valsaraj said only during the current Congress rule under stewardship of N. Rangasamy was Pondicherry witnessing several unique schemes. He said this government could therefore be given an extension and people should consider the welfare and people-friendly schemes implemented by the present government. Local Administration Minister A. Elumalai (representing Oussudu constituency) presided. Deputy Labour Commissioner D. Venkanna welcomed. Labour Officer (Welfare Scheme) Pathima Mary proposed a vote of thanks.
