Heavy inflows into Krishna, Tunga forecast

Dams release storages to accommodate floodwater



STRONG FLOW: The Krishna in spate at Beechupalli in Mahabubnagar district on Thursday.

KURNOOL: As heavy inflows is forecast into Krishna river due to incessant rain in the Western Ghats, dams across the river in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh started emptying the storage to accommodate the water on Thursday. Tungabhadra river was also bringing around 1,22,181 cusecs into the Tungabhadra dam at Hospet in Karnataka. On Krishna river, Alamatti dam discharged 2,40,338 cusecs while downstream Narayanapur project released 1,68,564 cusecs. The Jurala Priyadarshni dam in Andhra Pradesh started releasing 2,01,159 cusecs at 2 p.m.

According to a rough estimate, the present spell of flood in the Krishna is likely to add around 40 tmcft to the Srisailam reservoir. As against the total capacity of 263 tmcft at 885 ft FRL, the present storage accounted for 98 tmcft at 240.90 level by evening on Thursday. The inflow into the reservoir was estimated at 2,36,957 cusecs.

CWC report

According to the forecast by Central Water Commission (CWC), the trend will continue in Krishna river at Alamatti till Friday evening with a flood discharge of 2.40 lakh cusecs. In Tungabhadra river too, the trend of 1.25 lakh cusecs will continue for the next two days.

The level in the Tungabhadra dam rose to 1.622 feet accounting for storage of 73 tmcft by Thursday evening. The full reservoir capacity of Tungabadra dam is 110 tmcft.

Meanwhile, the water-sheet extended up to Pothireddypady head regulator on the Srisailam reservoir on Thursday. The Right Main Canal could be operated at 845 feet level while 854 feet is the benchmark for operating the gates.
