Bus strike from August 8

THRISSUR: A section of the private bus operators have called for an indefinite bus strike from August 8 in the State demanding reduction of sales tax on diesel or hiking bus fare. The All Kerala Bus Operators' Federation (AKBOF) and the Kerala State Bus Owners' Organisation (KSBOO) gave the call jointly, while the Stage Carrier Operators' Federation representing the long distance bus operators has not yet decided to join the strike. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the office-bearers said the decision to go ahead with the strike was taken, as the Government had gone back on the assurance given to them. — Staff Reporter

Air-India request to passengers

Thiruvananthapuram: Air-India (AI) has requested the passengers boarding from Thiruvananthapuram international airport to contact telephone numbers 2502281, 2500585 and 2501360 for details of the flights. A release, quoting Air-India manager, Thiruvananthapuram , R. Ghosh, said the step had been announced in view of the disruption to flights on account of incessant rains in Mumbai. - Staff Reporter

Insurance policies through KSFE

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Financial Enterprise (KSFE), a State Government undertaking has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Insurance Company for issuing general insurance policies through their branches all over Kerala. As per the terms of the agreement, the KSFE customers and general public will be able to get vehicle insurance, fire insurance, personal accident insurance, Mediclaim insurance and burglary insurance among others through the 234 branches of the KSFE in the State — Staff Reporter

Defence pensioners' identification

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Defence pensioners drawing pension through the Defence Pension Disbursing Office (DPDO), Kollam, who have not undergone identification in the past one year should report at the DPDP, Polayathode, Kollam, before August 16, for identification. Pension to those who fail to undergo the identification by the due date will be stopped with effect from September 1. — Staff Reporter

PSC test

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Public Service Commission test for the selection of LD Clerks in various departments from Kannur and Thrissur districts will be held from 2 p.m. to 3.15 p.m. on July 30. The test for Kannur district will be held in centres in that district and Kozhikode and Kasaragod districts and that for Thrissur in centres in that district and in Ernakulam , Palakkad and Malappuram districts. - Special Correspondent

TDB to open office in Pathanamthitta

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) will open a Deputy Devaswom Commissioner's office in Pathanamthitta soon. TDB president G. Raman Nair said the proposed office would be the fourth in the State. The three other offices are at Harippad, Thiruvananthapuram and Vaikkom. Mr. Nair said the temples under the sub-groups of Sabarimala, Punalur, Aranmula and Thiruvalla would come under the new Deputy Commissioner. — Staff Reporter

Thrissur, July 28.The South Indian Bank has invited applications from professional students in the State for participation in SIB's Grand Master Quiz Programme. The applications, attested by the principal, should reach the assistant general manager, Planning and Development Department, SIB Head Office (Thrissur - 680 001), before August 10. - Staff Reporter

Holiday for educational institutions

KOTTAYAM: The District Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions in Kottayam town on Friday in view of the Presidential visit. NSS Hindu College, Changanasserry, will also remain closed. - Staff Reporter

Crushed to death

Thrissur: A 40-year-old man, Hamsa, was killed when a tree fell over his house at Manathala in Chavakkad, near here, on Thursday, according to the police.

Hamsa was the tenant of the house owned by Cheenarapully Ali. - Staff Reporter
