THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government proposes to make more investment in the textile sector. Industries Minister V.K. Ebrahim Kunju said while inaugurating a customer meet and technical seminar organised by the Centre for Applied Research and Development in Textiles, a division of the Kerala State Textuile Corporation, here on Thursday that the textile sector was one area that could provide employment to many through low investment. He stated that because of this factor the Government was preparing special schemes for increasing the investment in the sector. The Textile Centre in Kannur had been included in the centrally aided Infrastructure Development Scheme. The Centre would be inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on July 30. The Minister praised the management and the workers for running the Textile Corporation, which was in the list of sick industries profitably for the last one year. It was the public sector that played the main role in the textile sector of the State. He reminded the staff of the need for maintaining the quality of the products. Managing director of Textile Corporation Jacob Joseph said that the company, which was incurring a loss of Rs.1 crore a month was making a net profit of Rs.30 lakhs a month now. He attributed it to the cooperation of the employees, the workers and the trade unions. He stated that the Corporation, in which the Government had invested around Rs.18 crores, was able to provide direct employment to 2,500 persons. That was the speciality of the textile sector.
