`Japan ahead in materials research'

BANGALORE: C.N.R. Rao, president of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, said here that materials and structures need be given due recognition keeping in view their vast advantages in industrial and commercial use.

Inaugurating the 4th International Conference on Smart Materials, Structures and Systems at the Indian Institute of Science, Prof. Rao said India has not done as much work in this field as Japan.

There are some materials which undergo dramatic changes on treatment, and subjects such as physics and chemistry can be as exciting as biology.

The conference chairman, V.K. Atre, revealed that some applications which are the result of many years of research will be applied in the field this year.
