Penganga in spate, 25 villages affected

Staff Reporter

Fields submerged; traffic on highway stranded for 11 hours

ADILABAD: A swollen Penganga left a trail of destruction in about 25 villages in the mandals of Tamsi, Jainad and Bela on Thursday. Large tracts (estimated to be in thousands of acres) of agriculture fields on either side of the riverbanks were submerged owing to the river in spate.

Vehicular traffic on the National Highway number 7 remained suspended for about 11 hours as the river flowed over the high bridge on the Maharashtra side.

It is learnt that huge amount of water was discharged from the Upper Penganga project in Maharashtra due to which the river was in spate.

The swell in the river was reported at about midnight. As the waters started flooding the low lying areas many villages were delinked. Gubdi in Tamsi, Pendalwada, Kamai, Kouta and Sangvi in Jainad and Sangdi in Bela mandal remained cut off due to water flowing over the local connecting bridges.

Other villages which were affected by the flooding are: Antargaon, Gomutri, Wadoor, Arli (T), Dhanora, Gunjala, Gollaghat and Tamsi (K) in Tamsi mandal, Anandpur, Lekarwadi, Sangvi (K), Hathighat, Mandagada, Pipparwada in Jainad and Bedoda, Kogdur and Arli in Bela mandal.

Due to Penganga being in spate, water from Satnala river and other local streams could not discharge into it which caused flooding of areas on their banks.

The district Collector R. Subba Rao, Superintendent of Police Kripanand Tripathi Ujela, RDO D. Ashok Kumar Naik and other officials toured the affected areas.
