Staff Reporter

Heavy discharge from Sriramsagar project

RISING LEVELS: SRSP gates were opened following heavy inflows.

KHAMMAMKARIMNAGAR: Low-lying areas in Kunavaram, Vararamachandrapuram and Velerpadu and Burgumpadu mandals were put on alert despite a marginal increase in the flood level in the Godavari on account of heavy discharge from the Sriramsagar project. The flood level at Bhadrachalam touched 31 feet on Thursday.

Warning level

It was likely to go up to 40 feet as 3.25 lakh cusecs of water let off from Sriramsagar, will add to considerably to the flood flow. By any means it would not touch the first warning level of 43 feet at the temple town.

The Khammam Collector, Rajendra Narendra Nimje reviewed the flood situation with officials in the temple town.

Flood control rooms were opened in the temple town as well as the Collectorate in Khammam. Twelve boats were requisitioned and kept stand by. Essential commodities were moved to the stock points more as a precautionary measure. The mandal and sectoral officials were asked to monitor the situation.

There was no inundation threat to any of the riverside villages unless the local streams--such as Taliperu, Kinnerasani and Sabari would add to the flood flow because of heavy rain in the catchment areas.

There is no threat to the Bhadrachalam town even the flood level touched second warning level of 48 feet or the third waning level of 53 feet as a flood bank was constructed protecting the town. In all 37 houses were damaged at different places in the district due to heavy rain.
