IT returns: no extension of deadline

CHENNAI: Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Binoy Gupta has ruled out extension of the last date for filing return of income for salaried and business class beyond August 1. For the convenience of taxpayers, 34 special counters would function in Chennai for receiving the returns till the last date, including on Saturday (July 30) and Sunday (July 31) with special counters for the handicapped and senior citizens. In other places in the State, arrangements had been made to meet the last-minute rush, said the Chief Commissioner, talking to newsmen here on Thursday.

Dr. Gupta said about one lakh returns were expected to be filed in Chennai alone during the weekend. Those, who failed to file the return before the deadline, would be charged an interest of 12 per cent of their tax liability. He said the Government had fixed a net collection target of Rs. 10,000 crores for Tamil Nadu for the current financial year as against Rs. 8,300 crores in the last financial year. On an average there had been an increase of 25 per cent in the collection every year.

He said filing of returns by an eligible assessee was compulsory and a penalty of Rs. 5,000 could be levied if he failed to file his annual income tax return. He appealed to taxpayers to bring their PAN card/ PAN allotment letter/ acknowledgement of applying for PAN while filing returns to make the filing process quick.
