CHENNAI:
: Rotary International District 3230 has launched a cent per cent literacy programme at a Corporation Primary School on Thursday.
Under its district governor, R. Shyamsundar, it has planned various projects for the year with a focus on literacy for underprivileged.
A special feature of the literacy initiative is a 12-month-long intensive coaching programme. Tata Consultancy Services is donating computers and software for the project.
The Adult Education Project will be conducted in coordination with Arivoli Iyakkam project of the Chennai Corporation at their community centres in slums.
The first beneficiary is the Kasi Viswanathar land Owners Association Centre. It is proposed to take up at least one centre in each of the remaining six Corporation zones.
The objectives of the programme include teaching basic literacy, infusing self-respect, counselling, vocational training and creating employment opportunity. The target groups have been identified as beggars/prisoners/youth in juvenile homes, uneducated parents of students in Corporation schools and uneducated youth/school dropouts.
