54 writers honoured

Awards given for three years 2000, 2001, 2002
CHENNAI:
The "Tamil Literary Award" was presented to 54 writers in Tamil by Community Services Banking of State Bank of India (SBI). The SBI chief general manager, Pradeep Chowdhary, lauded writers for their contribution. The SBI general managers, P.Pradeep Kumar and V.Srinivas, who have other languages as mother tongue spoke in Tamil about the awards.
The award winners, included the Sahitya Academy award winner, Vallikannan for his short story, "Punniyam Amm Paavam Pom" (first prize) and Doordarshan Kendra director, M.S.Perumal for his short story, "Visha Vattam"(third prize) for the year 2000.
As there were only few entries for drama category, the three years' prizes were combined and given to writers, S.Kalyanaraman, Thenkachi Ko.Swaminathan and Idaya Geetham Ramanujam.
The cash award for the first prize was Rs. 5000, Rs. 3,000 for second and Rs.2,000 for the third prize.
Distributing the prizes, T.Radhakrishnan, Inspector General, Railways, said contemporary writers had a sense of social conscious, which reflected in their writing.
