CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday came to the help of R.S. Devandiran, the young man who has secured admission to the Stanley Medical College but was unable to pay his fees, by coming forward to pay the entire fee for his medical education out of the Dr. M.G.R Trust funds.

The Chief Minister handed over a cheque for Rs. 24,899 to him on Thursday to cover the expenses for the first year of study. The amount would cover both tuition fee and expenditure on books, a press release here said.

Devandiran, a student of the Nazareth Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Avadi, had secured the 199th rank in the medical merit list. The son of a steel company labourer, he was hard pressed to pay the course fee, despite being allotted a seat in the Stanley Medical College in this year's medical counselling. He had petitioned the Chief Minister asking for financial help to pay the fees. His plight had been featured in these columns on Tuesday. All his woes have now come to an end as individual contributions are also pouring in to help the young man.
