Woman `kills' son, `hangs' herself

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: A 20-year-old housewife has allegedly asphyxiated her eight-month-old son to death before ending her life at her house in Kummaripeta behind KBN College under two-town police station limits.

The incident came to light on Thursday morning when the boy was found dead while Siva Jyothi was lying unconscious nearby.

They were rushed to the General Hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

Sub-Inspector Md. Sahera said the boy, Prabhat, died due to suffocation while his mother, Jyothi, hung herself from the ceiling fan. Jyothi's husband, Roop Kumar, was at his automobile spare parts shop when she resorted to the extreme step.

A case under Section 174 (unnatural death) was registered at the one-own police station as there was no complaint from Siva Jyothi's relatives. Her grandparents, who brought her up, ruled out the possibility of harassment being the reason.

"There are no complaints as of now. We came to know of it after the bodies were shifted to hospital. If any complaint is made later, we will change the sections accordingly," the SI said. The bodies were shifted to the General Hospital mortuary and post mortem would be conducted on Friday.
