President Kalam accorded warm welcome in city

To attend functions in Alappuzha, Kottayam

KOCHI: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was given a red carpet welcome at the airport at the Southern Naval Command here on Thursday evening.

The President arrived by a special IAF aircraft at 9.35 p.m., about one hour behind schedule.

He was accompanied by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Revenue Minister K.M. Mani.

Among the dignitaries who came to receive him were Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Naval Command Vice-Admiral S.C.S. Bangara, City Police Commissioner Dinendra Kashyap, District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, DIG (Security) Anil Kanth, and IG Southern Range T.P. Sen Kumar.

Later, the President left for Taj Residency where he would be stay overnight. Those who were scheduled to meet the President at the hotel included K.J. Alphonse, Commissioner, Land Revenue, Thiruvananthapuram, H.B. Moran Mar Baselious Thomas I, M.K. Malik, Municipal Councillor, Kodungallur, delegations of the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Forum for Revival and Reconstruction of Seafood Export Industries, Tamil Aikya Sangham and Raksha and Society for Care of Children.

The President will take part in several programmes in Kochi , Alappuzha, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta on Friday. He will reach Nedumbasserry airport on Friday morning at 7.30 a.m. and proceed to Kalady where he will address teachers and students of Adi Sankara Engineering College.

He will reach the Sree Sankara College grounds at 8.10 a.m.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will preside over the function. Revenue Minister K.M. Mani, Lonappan Nambadan, MP, and P.J. Joy, MLA, will speak.

The President is scheduled to arrive at Sringeri mutt at 7.50 a.m.Later, he will visit Muthalakkadavu, a revered spot on the riverbanks nearby that is associated with the legend of Adi Sankara.

After the function, he will leave for Alappuzha from the Naval base airport.

He will attend programmes in Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Parumala before leaving for Kodungalloor by road from Nedumbassery at 5.05 p.m.

He will return to New Delhi from Nedumbassery at 9.15 p.m.
