THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The traffic system in the city will be revamped after the inauguration of the underpass at Palayam on August 1. The Public Works Department has submitted a package of proposals to the Traffic Police to redirect the traffic flow along the roads around the underpass. According to the recommendations, the road from the LMS junction to the VJT hall is to be opened for two-way traffic. The road from the Students' Centre to the War Memorial passing through the front of the Assembly Complex is also to be declared a two-way route. The underpass will provide a two-lane road across the MG Road from the Asan Square to the Panjappura junction. In a bid to maximise the advantage offered by the underpass, the proposal calls for converting the Panjappura- Bakery junction stretch also into a two-way route. The plan highlights the need to reverse the one-way traffic along some of the key routes including the Nandavanam-Bakery junction, Panjappura- Nandavanam, AKG Centre- Spencer junction and the Statue- General Hospital roads. The road from the Public Library to Nandavanam will be closed to traffic from the Nandavanam end. The stretch of the MG road from the Students' Centre to the LMS junction is also proposed to be converted into a two-way route. Officials of the Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company said the recommendations had been submitted for clearance by the Traffic Police and the Traffic Advisory Committee.
