CHENNAI: The `wear helmet' campaign by the Chennai police has reached its next stage. The city police Welfare Cooperative Stores is seeing brisk sales of the safety gear, after the top brass introduced the sale of helmets in their cooperative stores at Pudupet last week.

About a dozen models, with ISI certification, are on display at the shop located within the Pudupet police quarters. At the stores, the headgear is sold at a lower price than the market rate. The Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, R. Nataraj, has announced that departmental action will be taken against police personnel who do not wear helmets and this has resulted in the increased sale of the headgear, the authorities say. In the last week, over 400 helmets were sold at the stores, which indicated an increased awareness among constabulary, officials involved say.

Helmets are available at prices ranging from Rs. 78 to Rs 553.

Plans are also underway to extend the sale to other cooperative stores run by and for the police personnel at Kondithope and a few other places in the city, a senior official said.
