NEW DELHI: Former Lok Sabha Secretary P. D. T. Achary will be the new Secretary General of the Lower House. He will succeed G. C. Malhotra who retires this month-end. An announcement to this effect was made by Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee in the House on Thursday in the pre-lunch session. Mr. Achary -- who retired earlier this year -- was selected for the post by the Speaker in consultation with the Leader of the House, Pranab Mukherjee, and the Leader of the Opposition, L. K. Advani. Before the announcement was made, party leaders bid farewell to Mr. Malhotra who will continue his association with the House as an honorary officer. As members recalled Mr. Malhotra's services and benign presence, Mr. Chatterjee quipped: "You have an angry Speaker and a smiling Secretary General.''
