NEW DELHI: Asian Tour has stepped in to resurrect the Indian Open golf after the championship missed its regular date in March. The prestigious championship, the oldest international sports event in India, will be held at the Delhi Golf Club course from October 27 to 30. After falling out with the International Management Group (IMG), the Indian Golf Union (IGU), the brand owners of the Indian Open, has signed a six-year deal with the Asian Tour thereby securing the event. In fact, the Asian Tour, which came into existence in January 2004 after the players formed a new representative body following the fallout with the erstwhile Asian PGA Tour, has even agreed to underwrite the Indian Open. "We are happy with the new arrangement as the Asian Tour will find the sponsors and event conduct the event," said the IGU Secretary General Wg. Cdr. Satish Aparajit. The IGU had earlier given the rights to the IMG but the firm failed to find a sponsor for the $300,000 event. The contract was to have run for two more years, but the IGU decided it was time it moved on. Sports Reporter
