Staff Reporter

Proposals have already been sent

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Ramanathapuram District Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Union Ministry of Surface Transport to lay a bypass road in Ramanathapuram and Paramakudi.

In a statement, its president, A. Anwardeen, said the towns are growing day-by-day both terms of population and vehicular movement.

Ramanathapuram and Paramakudi are district and divisional headquarters respectively. National Highway 49 passes through the hearts of the towns, causing inconvenience to the public and drivers.

Vehicular movements, including buses, tourist coaches, lorries, vans, two-wheelers and others increased manifold, resulting in congestion, chaos and slow movement of traffic.

He said the district and the two municipal administrations had already sent proposals to lay a bypass road in the towns. NH 49 assumed significance in view of the implementation of the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project, he added.
