KOZHIKODE: The Mathrubhumi Literary Prize was received on behalf of the late O .V. Vijayan by his wife Teresa Vijayan at the Tagore Centenary Hall on Saturday from poet O. N. V. Kurup.

The award which carries a statuette designed by M. V. Devan and a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakhs is to honour writers who have made significant contributions to Malayalam literature and the Malayali culture.

Though it was announced months ago, the award - presentation ceremony could not be held earlier as the author of `Khazakinte Ithihasam,' considered by many as the most celebrated novel in Malayalam, was bedridden and later passed away on March 30.

Speaking at the function on Saturday, M. Mukundan, novelist and Vijayans's long-time friend in Delhi, remarked Vijayan's life and literary works reflected the anxieties of his time.

He also pointed out that though Vijayan was meek and self-effacing, he was among the handful of authors who had the courage to protest against Emergency rule through a novel. He would live in Malayali minds through his novels, Mr. Mukundan said.

P. V. Chandran, Managing Editor, Mathrubhumi, presided.

The recipients of the Mathrubhumi Literary Prize since its inception three years ago were Thikkodian, M. V. Devan and Pala Narayanan Nair.
