dated August 1, 1955: Trip to Moon

Mr. Frederick Durant, President, International Astronautical Federation, has predicted that within 25 years it would be possible for people to go up in rockets and there would be trips to the Moon "before 2,000 A.D." Mr. Durant, an American engineer, arrived in Copenhagen on July 30 for the International Astronautical Conference which starts on August 1. Referring to the United States plan to send small rocket-driven satellites into space, he said, "I believe that within 25 years, it will be possible for human beings to go up in rockets. The next step will be to go to the Moon, but is still too early to take tickets to the Moon. The great problem is how to get a rocket back to the earth again. We should never send a human being in a rocket until we are sure that he can return safely to the earth. We shall have to learn how cosmic rays will affect the rocket and a human being inside it. It is believed that space rockets will have to develop gradually like the aircraft developed from a single and simple machine to a jet."
