Poor pass percentage in PU exam

Results to be announced in colleges at 4 p.m. today

BANGALORE: Only 27.56 per cent of the candidates cleared the II Pre-University examination conducted in 281 centres across the State from July 4 to 16. The results were the best in the last eight years.

The results will be announced in all the PU colleges at 4 p.m. on Monday.

A total of 1,82,616 students had appeared for the examination, of whom only 50,337 passed. The pass percentage for girls (32.02) was better than boys (25.13). Rural candidates with a pass percentage of 29.47 performed slightly better than the urban students with 27.01.

Udupi district topped the district-wise list with a pass percentage of 43.28, while Chitradurga stood last with 20.13 per cent pass. Among Scheduled Castes category candidates, Kodagu district topped with 40.54 per cent and Chitradurga was last with a pass percentage of 15.14.

Among Scheduled Tribes category candidates, Udupi topped with 42.17 per cent while Mandya district was last with a pass percentage of 12.9.

Candidates with Commerce combination secured the highest pass percentage of 30.02, followed by Arts with 28.78 percent and Science with 23.76 per cent. Kannada medium students were better with a pass percentage of 28.69. English medium students had a pass percentage of only 26.05.

In all, 602 students were caught for examination malpractice. As many as 148 of these students were from Gulbarga, 64 from Kolar, 47 from Bijapur, 39 from Bagalkot, 28 from Koppal and 32 from Tumkur district.

The pass certificate of the successful candidates and the marks card-cum-application of the failed students will be sent to the colleges concerned within a few days.

Those seeking re-totalling could send their applications to the Director, Pre-University Education, Palace Road, Bangalore: 560001. The last date for submitting the re-totalling applications is August 16. The fee is Rs. 200 per answer script per subject.

Issue of photocopies

The PU Department will issue photocopies of valued answer scripts in all subjects. August 8 is the last date for submission of application with a fee of Rs. 300 per photocopy per answer script. For revaluation, the last date to submit the applications is August 16 with a fee of Rs. 750 per answer script.

The last date to submit the fees along with the application for the April 2006 examination is August 31 without fine, September 10 with a fine of Rs. 20 per day up to a maximum of Rs. 200 and September 20 with a special penal fee of Rs. 25 per day up to a maximum of Rs. 250, a release from the PU Department said.
