Houses for families of shoemakers in Kalapet

Special Correspondent

PONDICHERRY: The Holy Family Church in association with St. Thomas Church Pondicherry, provided houses to the families of shoemakers at Arundathi Nagar in Kalapet near here recently, who were affected in the December 26 tsunami last year.

Secretary of the St Thomas Church Ninan V. Cherian said that 27 families in the village were hit by tsunami. A rehabilitation project was launched and temporary sheds were put up at Rs. 1.4 lakhs.

To help them earn their livelihoods, the church launched a few projects with financial assistance from Holistic Child Development of India, Pune, through the Chennai-Bangalore diocese of Marthoma Church.

Mr. Cherian said the construction of 25 semi-permanent houses (each costing Rs. 60,000), included provision of amenities like toilets, water supply and roads.

Four sewing machines were handed to the poor families. As part of a Rs. 18 lakh-project, Rs. 1 lakh will be utilised to set up a shoe-making workshop.
