CHENNAI: Saturday morning saw hundreds of students of various schools in the city eagerly participating in a dance contest at Emma Foulger Matriculation School in Royapettah. They later participated in the inauguration of the 19th edition of the Students' Book Fair, which began with a theme song focusing on `Neerodu Neengadha Vaazhvu' (water for life). Students from 12 schools presented tableaux and dances on the theme. Almost all schools received prizes but even the students did not anticipate what the first prize would be.
First prize
When the first prize-winning group lined up for a photograph with the chief guest, the students were handed a huge cup. The collective gasp of surprise that went up from the student audience eclipsed the non-stop applause and cheers that other schools got when their names were announced. The first prize went to the Corporation High School of V.P. Koil Street in Mylapore. The school's tableau depicted people washing animals, fishing and washing vessels in the same water. The school has won the first prize for the second consecutive year. Poet Tamilanban penned the lyrics, which stressed the need to conserve nature. All winners received paintings of trees in various seasons.
10-day fair
The 10-day book fair will have 30 stalls and has been organised by city schools. Inaugurating the fair, Prince of Arcot Mohammed Abdul Ali urged students to make book reading a habit. He wanted the government to prevent encroachments in Government-run schools and ensure free education up to the age of 14. L. Balasubramanian, president of NIIT @ School, also participated. The books at the fair include pocket editions of Indian history, language and science dictionaries besides children's storybooks.
