IMA criticises decision on two medical colleges

Special Correspondent

PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has expressed concern over the "commercialisation of medical education" in Pondicherry. General secretary R.V. Krishnakumar, in a release, said Association's executive committee meeting held here recently reviewed the situation in Pondicherry in the context of the government decision to permit two additional medical colleges in the private sector.

There were four medical colleges in Pondicherry and Karaikal and the decision to build two more institutions came as a "rude shock" to them. Dr. Krishnakumar said the Association had felt that there would be no sufficient availability of clinical materials for all these colleges.

The Association was of the view that a proper and thorough training was the basic necessity for the medical profession. Existing medical colleges were facing shortage of clinical material and setting up new colleges would only worsen the situation. He expressed displeasure over the manner in which government quota students were put to hardship in getting admission to private medical colleges here.
