Assam Government flayed for not implementing Supreme Court orders BJP opposes quota for Muslims introduced by State Government Party to support revival of legislative Council in State
NELLORE: Senior vice-president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) M. Venkaiah Naidu has reiterated the oft-repeated demand of the party for a uniform civil code in the country. Delivering the valedictory address at the three-day State Executive Committee meeting here, on Sunday, he however hastened to add that the demand did not mean a `uniform Hindu code'.
Call for debate
What was required was a uniform code irrespective of religion and Mr. Naidu called for a debate on the issue across the country. He advocated the need for population control among all communities and regretted the continuance of what he described as `Hindu bashing' and attempt to `poison' the minds of youth through frequent change of the contents in textbooks. In this connection he referred to the latest textbooks brought out by the Union Human Resources Ministry, which reportedly portrayed Prithiviraj as a `betrayer' and Jayachandra as a `loyalist', while the truth was otherwise. The BJP leader came down heavily came on the Assam Government for its alleged attempts to circumvent the verdict of Supreme Court which had set aside the illegal migrants Act (IMDT Act). Instead of implementing the contents of the judgement, the State Government had constituted a so-called sub-committee, just to drag the issue, keeping in view the coming Assembly elections. He called upon the BJP cadre to create awareness among people about the dangers involved in encouraging the entry of migrants into the country.
Mr. Naidu referred to the 5 per cent reservation for Muslims by the Andhra Pradesh Government and asserted that his party always opposed reservations on the basis of religion. Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, charged that the present UPA Government at the Centre, had diluted several programmes of the previous Government such as laying of national highways, supply of drinking water (Sujala Dhara scheme) and so on. The 30.2 per cent hike in petroleum prices, was the highest since independence, he asserted.
