KOZHIKODE: The ambitious beach beautification project in Kozhikode will be completed in August. A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting of officials held in the presence of Public Works Minister M.K. Muneer and Tourism Minister K.C. Venugopal in Thiruvananthapuram, according to an official release here recently. The Tourism Department's Rs.4-crore project mainly involves the development of the beach road from Gujarati High School to the Corporation Office. Erecting sodium vapour lamps, installing cast iron benches, constructing fountains, laying tiles for walkway and planting saplings and grass were some of the works yet to be completed. The high-level meeting also approved the report of the expert committee that suggested constructing a seawall to prevent erosion. The expert committee had studied the reasons for the collapse of a portion of the walkway last month. The meeting also decided to use geo-textiles for constructing the seawall. The PWD would provide Rs.45 lakhs for the purpose. A. Sujanapal and T.P.M. Zahir, MLAs; Mayor Thottathil Raveendran, PWD Secretary Lida Jacob, District Collector Rachna Shah and Chief Engineer Thomas Mathew participated in the meeting.
