CHENNAI: Top seed R. Balasubramaniam of ICF, Chennai scored an easy opening round victory against Dileep Raghavan Ravindran in the 5th Adyar Times FIDE rated Open chess tournament here on Sunday.

In the opening round, higher rated players had a smooth time except former National `A' player and seed No.4, V. Subramaniam of MTC, Chennai who won a knight for two pawns and struggled long to convert it into a victory against N.G. Elaya Raja.
