PATHANAMTHITTA: Close on the heels of the westerly winds that had wreaked havoc in many parts of Thiruvalla, the central villages in the river basins of Pampa, Manimala and Achencoil are faced with flood threat in the wake of the heavy downpour in the upper reaches, especially the forest and hilly terrains, during the past few days. Pampa and Achencoil rivers have breached their banks in several places in Ranni, Aranmula, Pandalam and Thiruvalla. According to official sources, 18 families in the Ezhikkad settlement colony, near Aranmula, have been shifted to the community hall in Ezhikkad as floodwaters entered their dwellings on Sunday afternoon. The market in Ranni has been flooded with the overflowing river water entering through the Mamukku canal.
Villages flooded
The floodwaters have entered into many areas in the Upper Kuttanad villages of Kadapra, North Miranom, Peringara and Amichakari. The district administration has opened a round-the-clock flood monitoring and relief cell at the Taluk office in Thiruvalla (Phone: 2601303). The keys of many schools in the flood-prone areas of Upper Kuttanad have been handed over to the local panchayat authorities concerned for opening relief camps in case of an emergency. Many houses in the low-lying areas of Upper Kuttanad have been surrounded by floodwaters. The natural flood escape in the region has been blocked with the conversion of many bunds on the paddy field boundaries into new motorable roads.
