CHENNAI: : After two postponements, draft electoral rolls of the 39 Assembly constituencies covered under the intensive revision will be made available to voters tomorrow. Initially, the rolls can be accessed in the offices of electoral registration officers. Copies will also be furnished to recognised parties. Subsequently, residents' welfare associations, polling booths and post offices will be provided with relevant portions, according to Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta. On perusing the rolls, people can file claims for additions or objections to any wrong entry. The last date to record these is August 16. Of the 39 constituencies covered, 34 are in the six municipal corporation areas. The others are two constituencies each in Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts and Hosur. The need for intensive revision arose from complaints of large-scale deletion of names during the 2004 Lok Sabha election. Originally, the draft rolls were to be published on July 11, but this was postponed to July 20. The second postponement was made 10 days ago and August 1 was fixed as the revised date, as more time was needed to complete the preparation.
Online registration
People in the 39 constituencies can use the Internet to apply for inclusion of names. Forms can be downloaded from www.elections.tn.nic.in or www.tn.gov.in, Mr Gupta said. The last date is August 16. But prospective voters must have an e-mail account at the time of applying online for inclusion of names. The State Election Department will shortly create a Web search facility to avoid unnecessary applications. Once it is established, people can themselves scrutinise whether their names figure in the rolls. In respect of constituencies covered under the summary revision, online registration was available only in the last leg of the period for inclusion. Hence the response was not encouraging. Moreover, the areas were predominantly rural. But this time round, given that the constituencies are urban with more access to computers, the authorities expect a better response.
