Srikakulam
Special Correspondent
SRIKAKULAM: The ruling Congress and the TDP virtually launched their election campaign for the municipal elections in the district where three civic bodies; Srikakulam, Itchapuram and Amadalavalasa, are up for grabs. There will be no election for the fourth municipality, Palasa-Kasibugga, because its term is yet to expire. The Congress launched its campaign on Saturday by hoisting party flags in all the 84 wards in the three municipalities. Senior Congress leader and freedom fighter Tripurana Raghavadas hoisted the flag in Srikakulam. The programme called `Rajiv Pracharibheri' would continue up to August 5 when Congress leaders in all 84 wards will assemble again and dedicate themselves to the service of the people. S.Gopal, the APCC observer for municipal elections in the district, attended the flag-hoisting programme. The TDP on the other hand had already launched its campaign by organising ward meetings in all the three municipalities. An interesting aspect is that both the parties have decided to make `performance and the lack of it' the main issue for the elections. Speakers at a meeting held recently by the Congress exhorted the cadre to explain to the people the achievements of the Congress Government in the last 14 months. "Let us not say what we will do, let us explain to people what had been done in the last 14 months. We have done enough and we seek votes on the strength of that good work," said speakers at the meeting who included the Minister for Revenue and relief Dharmana Prasada Rao. On the other hand, the TDP had decided to concentrate on the failures of the Congress."No Government is beset with such a large number of scandals and corruption charges", was the refrain of the TDP leaders.
