Inter-collegiate quiz competition

MANGALORE: The Mangalore chapter of the Association of British Scholars (ABS) in collaboration with British Council, Chennai, is organising an inter-collegiate quiz competition for degree students of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts on August 13. According to a press release, students of arts and science colleges, including professional colleges, at undergraduate level are eligible to participate.

Curbs on registration only in Bangalore

Bidar: The Government's restrictions on registration of housing cooperative societies is limited only to Bangalore Urban district and Bangalore City Corporation Limits and does not extend to other towns, according to the Minister for Cooperation, R.V. Deshpande. The Minister told Quazi Arshad Ali in the Legislative Council that 11 of the 41 housing co-operative societies were defunct in Bidar district, 11 were under liquidation and the rest were active. — Staff Correspondent

attendant exam

HUBLI: The last date for filling forms for appearing for the examination being conducted for the posts first and second grade attendants in the Department of Factories and Boilers is August 25th. A press note issued by the Senior Assistant Director, Boilers, has said that the date and place of the examination will be notified later. 1.8 lakh families in Bidar have BPL cards

Bidar: As much as 60 per cent of the total families in Bidar district use ration cards to get subsidised food grains and kerosene every month. The Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Mahadev Prasad, said in reply to a question in the Legislative Council by Quazi Arshad Ali that 1.8 lakh families in the district have either Antyodaya Anna or Below Poverty Line cards. The population of the district, according to the 2001 census is 15 lakhs, according to a press release from Mr. Ali.

Two buried alive in Gundlupet

MYSORE: Two persons were buried alive when earth caved in while they were working in a field at Marlapura village in Gundlupet taluk of Chamarajanagar district on Sunday.

The victims were identified as Shivappa, 37, and Mahadevaswamy, 17. According to the police, the two were removing sand and silt that had accumulated in the field when the incident occurred. Mahesh, 27, had a narrow escape.

The Gundlupet police have registered a case. — Special Correspondent

Adaki is president of HMC

HAVERI: Parashuram Adaki and Gouramma Havanur were elected president and vice-president of the Haveri Municipal Council on Saturday.

Mr. Adaki (Congress) defeated the rebel Congress candidate, Rajanna Bukkashetti, who received support from the Bharatiya Janata Party. Mr. Adaki got 15 votes, while Mr. Bukkashetti got 13 votes.

The vice-president was elected unopposed.

The post of president was in the general category and that of the vice-president was reserved for the Scheduled Castes.

Azeezulla Baig, the Deputy Commissioner, presided over the meeting and conducted the election.

Press Club office-bearers

BANGALORE: M.A. Ponnappa from Prajavani was elected unopposed as the president of the Press Club of Bangalore for 2005-06 in the annual elections here on Sunday.

The other elected office-bearers are Y.G. Ashok Kumar, vice-president; K. Sadashiv Shenoy, general secretary; N.S. Shankar, secretary and K.M. Veeresh, treasurer.

The managing committee members are Harishchandra Bhat B., Ashok Kumar K.M., G.S. Narayana Rao, N.H. Mruthyunjaya, Keshav Vitla and Shanthamma. — Staff Reporter

Action against officers

Bidar: The Government is initiating action against 27 officers booked by the Lokayukta last year.

The police wing of the Lokayukta had registered 76 cases against these officers, said the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, in a reply to a question in the Legislative Council by Quazi Arshad Ali, recently.

Mr. Singh also said that an amendment to the Lokayukta Act, to provide more powers to the anti-corruption agency, is under the Government's consideration, according to a release by Mr. Ali. — Staff Correspondent

Vehicle ownership

Bangalore: The average two-wheeler and car ownership levels in the metros, which were 112 and 14 per 1,000 numbers respectively in 1994, is expected to grow to 393 and 48 respectively by 2021.

According to the Press Information Bureau, there will be 53 million two wheelers and 6 million cars in the next 20 years.

Absence of adequate and effective mass transport facilities in these cities will result in greater use of personal motor vehicles choking the already congested roads.

This will in turn result in increasing accidents and polluting the atmosphere. — Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: One hundred and ninety nine police inspectors, who were holding charge as Deputy Superintendent of Police in districts and in charge Assistant Commissioner of Police in cities, have been permanently posted as Deputy Superintendents of Police and Assistant Commissioners of Police.

According to an order of the State Government on Saturday, all the police inspectors will work in the new post in the same places where they are working now. The Government has also promoted two other inspectors to the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police. — Staff Reporter

Four arrested, fake currency seized

DAVANGERE: The police arrested four persons for allegedly being involved in the printing of fake currency notes. The police also recovered computers, screen printing instruments and other chemicals used in the manufacture of fake notes. The police raided a house in Saraswatipuram where the fake currency was allegedly being printed. The arrested were identified as Shankar of Hiriyur, Vasanth Patil of Chennagiri, Mylarappa of Davangere, and Nataraj of Chennagiri. The police have recovered fake currencies with a face value of Rs. 2.50 lakhs. — Staff Correspondent

Woman killed in wall collapse

HASSAN: One person was killed and another injured when the wall of a house collapsed following incessant rainfall in Moodanahalli of Alur taluk on Saturday night. The Alur police said that Javaramma (50) and Padma (20) were injured when the wall of their house collapsed. They were admitted to the hospital where Javaramma died on Sunday morning. — Staff Correspondent

Four held on murder charge

CHITRADURGA: The Chitradurga police arrested four persons in connection with the murder of a gram panchayath member at Kadur village of Hosadurga taluk on Sunday. The police gave their names as Veerabhadrappa, Harish, Lokesh and N.G. Murugendrappa. Villagers of Kadur had resorted to a protest demanding the arrest of the accused. — Staff Correspondent
