IPS officers' transfer should be quashed, demands BJP

"Honest officers shunted and `corrupt' officers have been awarded with important postings"

PATNA: The BJP today demanded quashing of the transfer order of 17 IPS officers which triggered a crisis in the administrative circle.

The party said the NDA would raise the issue in the Lok Sabha tomorrow and would also apprise the President about the prevailing situation in Bihar.

BJP state president Sushil Kumar Modi told newspersons here that honest and upright officers had been shunted and "incredible" officers had been awarded with important postings in the recent transfers, which forced the State Chief Secretary G.S. Kang to go on a long leave as a mark of protest.

Mr. Modi alleged that the Governor was "misusing" his power and requested the Election Commission to immediately put a blanket ban on the transfers and postings.

He alleged that the Governor was misusing Rajbhavan and was making large scale transfers "suitable to some particular political groups".

Mr Modi urged the EC to immediately intervene and suggested it evolve some strategy to prevent the transfer and postings as the election months had already been announced.

He said the NDA would meet the President with a demand to immediately recall Governor Buta Singh as the law and order situation was getting worse by the day and the criminals were having a field day in the state under President's Rule.

The NDA would hold a meeting tomorrow in New Delhi to decide its future course of strategy.

Without disclosing the names of the IAS and IPS officers, Mr Modi said some of the bureaucrats informed him in confidence about the important role being played by the Governor's sons in the transfers and postings.

Mr Modi further alleged that all 17 transfers had been made under political pressure and at the behest of Railway Minister Lalu Prasad, who was manipulating the situation in his favour.

He said the advisor to the Governor Arun Pathak, a close confidant of Mr Prasad, had consulted the Railway Minister along with the file of transfer and postings of the officers.

Mr Modi lamented the "inertness" of the bureaucrats, saying that no association either of the IAS or IPS reacted on the situation.

Overwhelmed at the public response to the NDA's Nyaya Yatra, Mr Modi said the people came in support of the NDA. He said the third phase of the Nyaya Yatra, commencing from August 13, had been postponed. However, the rest of the phases of the yatra would continue.

To a query, Mr Modi said Shatrughan Sinha was a national figure and no leader had been ignored in the Nyaya Yatra.
