MANGALORE: The Minister for Minorities Welfare and Youth Services, Jabbar Khan Honnali, has instructed the Deputy Commissioner, H.V. Parshwanath, to coordinate with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and local authorities to improve the condition of the National Highway 48 and 17 between Bantwal and Suratkal as the 50-km stretch between the two cities is in a bad shape. The Mangalore division of National Highways, which was maintaining this stretch, recently handed it over to the NHAI, which is in the process of converting it into a four-lane road. However, NHAI is not keen to take up the regular maintenance of this stretch, as it is already investing a large sum on converting the road into a four-lane road. The National Highway division here had reportedly informed NHAI that they will not maintain the road once it has been handed over to them. Mr. Honnalli has asked Dr. Parshwanath to coordinate with the NHAI and the local civic authorities, including Mangalore City Corporation, to clear the choked storm-water drains adjacent to the National Highway. Most of the rainwater is flowing onto the road and the intensity of rains is worsening the problem of potholes, he said. The stretch of National Highway 17 between Hosabettu and Panambur and at Kuloor is in poor shape as is the stretch between Mahavir Circle and Bantwal along National Highway 48. Mr. Honnalli said maintenance work on the Ghat section between Shirady and Sakleshpur along National Highway 48 should be taken up.
